The Sunflowers

Project type

light installation

Date

June 2016

Location

Sidney

The Sunflowers warmly welcomes each visitor with a bow, charmingly introducing them to the potential of harnessing solar energy for a sustainable future.

This joyful light sculpture features a collection of potted sunflowers arranged along a walkway oriented east to west, maximizing sunlight exposure. Solar panels capture energy from the sun during the day and store it in batteries embedded within the flowers. At night, this stored energy illuminates LEDs in the petals and powers the gentle ‘bowing’ movement.

In nature, sunflowers exhibit heliotropism, meaning they respond directionally to sunlight. A young sunflower faces east at dawn, greeting the sun, then gradually turns west as it follows the sun's path across the sky. During the night, it slowly reorients back to the east to begin the cycle anew. Sunflowers are beloved by both children and adults, often symbolizing happiness, positivity, and adoration. In many Eastern cultures, they also represent intelligence, strength, good luck, and a long life.
